Barcelona fans have reacted furiously to the surprise transfer of their favourite player, Marc Cucurella, to the Spanish capital as the new Real Madrid star has responded to the backlash.
The left-back completed his transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid earlier this week in a big-money deal. The move to Los Blancos has not been popular with many Barcelona fans, who believe he is a traitor to his La Masia roots and previous ties with a return to the Camp Nou. Some fans have even been calling him a “traitor” and “snake”.
Cucurella spoke to the media on Thursday, and was asked about the angry reaction from the Blaugrana faithful. The 27-year-old answered coolly in an interview with El Mundo (as quoted by Fabrizio Romano):
“Barcelona fans are angry at me?“Barcelona fans are angry at me?” It’s very hard to say no to Real Madrid when they say so much, I’m very happy with my choice. You have to accept the opinions, I’m very thankful to all of Barcelona that gave me. But when Real Madrid insists so much, it’s very hard to say no to them and I had no doubts.”
Cucurella’s transfer only heightens the rivalry between the two giants of El Clásico. He is the latest player to cross the divide after several high-profile players have done so in the past.
However, the defender seems to be keen to take up his new role at the Santiago Bernabéu under Jose Mourinho, where he will be battling for a place in the starting eleven at left-back.
