Real Madrid Sign Ibrahima Konate on Free Transfer from Liverpool
Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid is announced.
Real Madrid have announced the signing of Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate as their third big summer signing.

The 27-year-old France international has become a free agent after his Liverpool contract ended at the end of the 2025-26 season. This comes on the heels of Real Madrid’s recent signings of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Bernardo Silva.
Konate, who was a late change for France’s 3-1 win over Senegal in their opener, will be leaving Liverpool after five successful seasons at Anfield. He was acquired by the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021 and helped them win the Premier League title in 2024-25 under the guidance of Jürgen Klopp, who won two EFL Cups and one FA Cup under his leadership.

The centre-back was also in the 2022 Champions League final, against Real Madrid, who defeated Liverpool 1-0.
Konate will now get to see his former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold at the Santiago Bernabéu. He has signed a four year deal with Los Blancos and will officially join the team at the end of this month.
A Strong Defensive Addition
During his time at Liverpool, Konate made 183 appearances the most by any French-born player in the club’s history. Of those, 154 were in partnership with Virgil van Dijk, making them one of the most potent defensive duos in European football.
Real Madrid have been busy in the transfer market, ahead of their second spell under Jose Mourinho. The signing of Cucurella (€60m from Chelsea) and Bernardo Silva (free agent) demonstrate their desire to make a major investment this summer.

Player Background
Ibrahima Konaté was born in Paris on 25 May 1999 and began his professional career in France with Sochaux, where he made his senior debut as a teenager. His physical gifts were obvious early, and in 2017 he made the move to Germany, joining RB Leipzig, where he developed into one of the Bundesliga’s most highly rated young defenders.
Across four seasons at Leipzig, Konaté made 95 appearances and gained valuable experience in the Champions League, building a reputation for recovery pace, aerial dominance and calm distribution from the back. That form earned him a move to Liverpool in the summer of 2021.
At Anfield, the Frenchman went on to make 183 appearances and score seven goals over five seasons. He formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk, with the pair playing 154 matches together, and collected an impressive set of honours: the Premier League title in 2024/25, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Community Shield. He also started for Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League final against Real Madrid.
On the international stage, Konaté made his France debut in 2022 and has since become a regular in the squad, earning around 30 caps. He was part of the France side that reached the 2022 World Cup final, coming off the bench in the showpiece match against Argentina.
Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid: Why This Move Matters
Signing a 27-year-old France international centre-back on a free transfer is the kind of business every top club dreams of. Konaté arrives at the Santiago Bernabéu at the peak of his career, with five seasons of Premier League football and major finals behind him, and Real Madrid have secured him without paying a transfer fee.
He becomes the club’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, which underlines how seriously Madrid are strengthening. At centre-back, Konaté offers a rare blend of physical power and technical quality: he is quick across the ground for a defender of his size, dominant in the air, and comfortable bringing the ball out from defence.
There is also a personal subplot. Konaté will be reunited with Trent Alexander-Arnold, his former Liverpool team-mate, who made the same journey to Madrid. Having two players who already know each other’s game should help the new arrival settle quickly, particularly in building understanding down the right side of the defence.
From a tactical point of view, Konaté’s profile suits a team that defends on the front foot. His recovery speed allows the defensive line to push higher up the pitch, and his strength in duels makes him well equipped for the physical battles of La Liga and the Champions League. On paper, he looks like a natural fit for a side that dominates possession but needs defenders who can cope when games become stretched.
What Happens Next
Konaté has signed a four-year deal with Los Blancos and will officially link up with the squad at the end of this month. He will then begin pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign, where expectations will be as high as ever.
Competition for places at the back will be fierce. Real Madrid’s squad already includes established centre-backs such as Antonio Rüdiger, Éder Militão and Dean Huijsen, along with the emerging Raúl Asencio. Konaté’s experience at the highest level, however, means he will expect to compete for a starting role from the outset rather than settle for a squad place.
For Madrid, the signing continues a clear transfer strategy: targeting proven, high-calibre players at the end of their contracts. It is a low-risk, high-reward move for a player with more than 180 appearances for one of England’s biggest clubs and a World Cup final on his record. If Konaté reproduces his Liverpool form in white, this could prove to be one of the signings of the summer.
